OUR TOP TIPS! 🤓

Between our TikToks videos and speaking to Customers direct,

we're often asked for our recommendations on what products, tools & must-have gadgets people should have to help them get the best out of their Caravanning or Motorhome experience 😊

Whilst this page is a work in progress, we've made a start by listing some of our recommendations 👌

CLIPSAL ADAPTER

Have you got an older caravan and always wondered what that small,

white 12V socket was for? These are Clipsal sockets could provide 12V power to a gadget or appliance with a two pin plug.

This 12V system never really took off and was instead replaced with the cigarette type plug and socket we see in cars.

You can, however, get an adaptor to made this socket useable!

Adapter in place, you can now hook up your 12v TV or add a USB Charging port.

TORQUE WRENCH

As per advice from the National Caravan Council [NCC],

Caravan wheel bolt torque should be rechecked after 30 miles and before 'EVERY TRIP'.

We strongly recommend every Caravanner has a torque wrench and completes these checks BEFORE setting off.

Standard wheel nut torques are 88 Newton Metres [NM] for Steel Wheels and 130 Newton Metres [NM] for Alloy Wheels.

Please be sure to check your manufactures handbook or caravan data plate however as some manufacturers deviate for these 'Standard Figures'.

SMOKE ALARM

You wouldn't give a second thought to having a working Smoke Alarm in your house, so why not have one in your Caravan or Motorhome?

This inexpensive safety device can help keep you, your family and your pride and joy protected by alerting you early to any potential fire threats.

We're aware that Caravans and Motorhomes can sit for long periods without use over Winter, and as we know cold temperatures can quickly deplete batteries, we strongly recommend testing your fire alarm on every outing.

CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR

A Carbon Monoxide is another essential piece of safety equipment you should have in your Motorhome and Caravan, especially since you sleep in these spaces next to gas burning appliances.

Whilst fridges are room sealed, and boilers have balance flues, no products of combustion should ever enter the living area.

A Carbon Monoxide alarm will alert you early in the event of incorrect combustion.

TOILET CHEMICALS

Whilst Blue Chemicals have long been the 'go to' in the camping world, some small campsites who use septic tank systems insist on using green chemicals only.

As a result, our sister company GO Forth! Motorhome Hire only put green chemicals in thier hire fleet so that their customers are never unable to empty their toilet waste.

Whilst you can get toilet chemicals in liquid format also, we find the sachet option avoids spills and the dosage is accurate everytime.

TOILET ROLL

Believe it or not, you really should be careful about the type of toilet roll your using in your toilet cassette!

Your toilet cassette has internal plastic moving parts such as vents and waste level indicators, and if you use 'normal' toilet roll that will lay and congeal on the top of your waste, you run the risk or causing irrepairable damage!

Thetford Aquasoft is pursposly designed to dissolve quickly (it says so on the packet!) so the contents of your waste tank are less likely to cause damage to your toilet cassette. Our sister company uses this toilet roll on their hire fleet for this very reason as replacement cassettes aren't cheap!

LEISURE BATTERY

It's important that Leisure Batteries are well maintained and looked after, particularly during Winter months where they should be topped up / trickle charged at least once every six weeks.

They should never be left on charge 24/7, either!

Unlike car batteries, if your Leisure Battery voltage ever drops below 10.7 Volts, it won't be able to hold a charge and is essentially dead and needs replaced.

Yuasa batteries are a good, trusted brand, and often our choice when replacing dead leisure batteries.

SMART BATTERY CHARGER

Having a smart battery charger such as the Noco Genius is essential to help maintain your Leisure Battery.

Leisure Batteries should be charged every six weeks when not in use to ensure that they remain in optimum condition.

A Smart Battery Charger will trickle charge your Leisure Battery safety and ensure that it is fully recharged after a cycle.

Leisure Batteries should never be allowed to drop below 10.7V as they can never recover, unlike car batteries, so would need to be replaced which can prove expensive.

BUDGET TOOL KIT

If running a hire company has taught us anything is that you'll always be thankful you packed a budget toolkit. It doesn't need to be fancy, just have enough decent quality tools to get you out a pickle and restore order to your holiday!

Motorhomes (in particular!) are under a constant state of vibration when driving, so it doesn't take long for a hinge to work loose or you find a cupboard catch in need of a quick nipping up. Even if you don't need personally need the toolkit, it won't be long until someones asking to borrow a screwdriver around camp!

12V BLADE FUSES

Whilst most of the time camping power trips affect 230V electrics (likely because you'll have everything on full power!), 230V MCB's are at least resettable.

A simple accident such as spilling in drink onto a 12v outlet could be enough to cause a fuse to blow.

Not only that, but USB outlets in Caravans and Motorhomes run off 12V, so if these outlets were to stop working as a result of a blown fuse, it won't be long before the kids start complaining of draining batteries!

EMERGENCY MAINS HOOKS UP

This is a piece of kit Wee James wishes he had on his maiden Caravan voyage, as unbeknown to him at the time, an unnoticed drink spill would soon render is caravan electrics dead at 9.30pm at night...

Thankfully, as a result of having a budget tool kit on board (and being a very good engineer!), James restored power to the caravan over an hour later.

Should you encounter an issue with your Caravan electrics whilst you are away, this piece of kit is the safesty way to get power into your caravan (in through the window) until you can get an engineer to have a good look a the problem.

MOBILE SIM WiFi ROUTER

James never leaves home without his Mobile Sim WiFi Router as having Internet wherever he goes is an absolute must when you have kids!

This WiFi router is powered by a Sim card with an unlimited data plan -

you can pick up pay as you go unlimited data plans for around £15-£20 a month.

Simply cancel when you're not travelling or use the router as a second internet  system in the house to avoid slow speeds!

These routers really are powerful and you can surf and stream the web just like you would at home.

Discovering a water leak when you're on holiday is probably one of the Top 5 things that can (and will!) go wrong and put a dampener on your stay.

[No Pun Intended!]

Having a couple of these John Guest 12mm Stop Ends in the caravan 'just in case' means you can split the water pipe before the offending leak and cap off the pipes to prevent water leaking and causing any potential damage.
